Hi everyone,

For today, we will focus on Overthewire, a website used by many info-security practitioners to learn their infosecurity skills.

OverTheWire: Wargames

There are 9 tracks available, beginning with Bandit to Vortex. Definitely, the easiest will be Bandit and the tracks are ranked in order of difficulty. However, the tracks are not of the same theme, i.e Bandit focuses on honing linux commands, while Maze focuses on reverse-engineering.

For the above reason, you can safely say that Overthewire covers a wide range of infosecurity areas and beginners can safely practice their skills here before deciding which areas they wish to specialise it.

To commence, begin SSH connection to the OverTheWire server using the credentials shown in the top left corner. The credentials provided are for Level 0 of the game, and subsequent credentials have to be unlocked after successfully completing the previous level.

The main advantage of OverTheWire is that it is free and well structured. For such content, you easily have to pay upward of $10 a month from popular content providers such as TryHackMe or HackTheBox. The difficulty level there may also be not suitable for beginners. One difference however, is that there is little guidance available on completing the OverTheWire challenges and Googling for tips or solutions is the only way out.

Moving forward, I will be releasing the solutions on how to complete OverTheWire challenges, beginning with Bandit. I hope that the solutions will help you to shorten the learning curve and accelerate learning.
